چکیده
Parity violating extensions of the standard electromagnetic theory cause in vacuo rotation of the plane of polarization of propagating photons. This effect, also known as cosmic birefringence, impacts the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy angular power spectra, producing non-vanishing T–B and E–B correlations that are otherwise null when parity is a symmetry. Here we present new constraints on an isotropic rotation, parametrized by the angle α, derived from Planck 2015 CMB polarization data. To increase the robustness of our analyses, we employ two complementary approaches, in harmonic space and in map space, the latter based on a peak stacking technique. The two approaches provide estimates for α that are in agreement within statistical uncertainties and very stable against several consistency tests. Considering the T–B and E–B information jointly, we find α = 0. ◦31 ± 0. ◦05 (stat.) ± 0. ◦28 (syst.) from the harmonic analysis and α = 0. ◦35 ± 0. ◦05 (stat.) ± 0. ◦28 (syst.) from the stacking approach. These constraints are compatible with no parity violation and are dominated by the systematic uncertainty in the orientation of Planck’s polarization-sensitive bolometers.

Cosmological Signature of New Parity-Violating Interactions
Are there any manifestations of parity violation other than those observed in weak interactions? A map of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) temperature and polarization will provide a new signature of P violation. We examine two classes of P-violating interactions that would give rise to such a signature. The first interaction leads to a cosmological birefringence, possibly driven by quinte...
متن کاملGlobal polarization and parity violation study in Au+Au collisions
We present results on the parity violation effects and global system polarization measurements in Au+Au collisions at √ sNN = 62 GeV obtained with the STAR detector at RHIC. The parity violation effects are studied by three particle azimuthal correlations of charged particles. The global polarization of the system is examined by measuring the polarization of strange hyperons with respect to the...
متن کاملPlanck intermediate results - XLVII. Planck constraints on reionization history
We investigate constraints on cosmic reionization extracted from the Planck cosmic microwave background (CMB) data. We combine the Planck CMB anisotropy data in temperature with the low-multipole polarization data to fit ΛCDM models with various parameterizations of the reionization history. We obtain a Thomson optical depth τ = 0.058±0.012 for the commonly adopted instantaneous reionization mo...
متن کاملConstraints on four-Fermi contact interactions from low-energy electroweak experiments
We investigate the constraints on four-Fermi contact interactions from low-energy lepton-quark and lepton-lepton scattering experiments — polarization asymmetries in electron (muon)-nucleon scattering experiments, cesium and thallium atom parity violation measurements, neutrino-nuclei and neutrino-electron scattering experiments. These constraints are then combined by assuming the lepton and qu...
متن کاملR-parity Violation and Flavour Violation
The MSSM with R-Parity violation allows flavour changing neutral currents through two mechanisms, directly through one loop diagrams, and indirectly through the generation of flavour violation in the sparticle sector. We discuss the use of these mechanisms for constraining R-Parity violation, and show that the indirect mechanism parametrised in terms of the running of the soft masses from the u...
